Ormond Beach-based Security First Insurance’s summer internship program is helping to fill the gap while the company continues to recruit talent and fill more than 60 open positions. The internship program is designed to attract local young talent, provide a clear picture of what it’s like to have a career in the insurance industry, and in the long-term, fill open positions.
“Many students do not have an accurate understanding of what it’s like to work in the insurance industry—they often think of the role of an insurance agent,” said Melissa Burt DeVriese, President of Security First Insurance. “This program is strategically designed to attract talent before they begin their careers and open their eyes to the many fulfilling career opportunities available in a variety of fields, such as technology, data science, marketing, and product design,” she continued.
The program runs from May to August, with many students returning during winter break in December and early January. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA to be accepted into the program. Once onboard, students learn from strategic, high-level professionals within the insurance arena and gain exposure to real-world business systems while also giving back to the local community.
Students undergo a formal interview and selection process before being assigned to work across one of nine business areas. As part of the 18-week program, students also develop a community service project to support a local non-profit. This year, students chose Halifax Humane Society and created a competition among nearly 400 of Security First’s employees to donate food and supplies.
“This is the first time I’ve worked in a corporate environment,” said Adriana Salerno, a Security First Intern and a new student at the University of South Florida. “As part of this program, I’ve been able to develop the marketing campaign to promote our community service project internally and manage some of the company’s social media marketing. It’s been a very rewarding and fun experience so far.” She continued.
“Not only have I been given the opportunity to work on projects that bring the company value, but I’ve also met with several employees to develop video interviews that shed light on what it’s like to work at Security First,” said Andrea Ferrer, a Security First Intern and a second-year student at the University of Central Florida.
Since the program’s inception, 30% of the interns hired have returned to Security First, accepting full-time, permanent positions. Of those, 10% have progressed through the ranks and are now serving in management roles. Security First Insurance has several open positions in different business areas, including software development, product design and development, customer service, and claims. The company offers a generous compensation package, including employer-paid health care benefits, 401K, and tuition reimbursement. Many of the positions do not require prior insurance experience.
